Atchafalaya National Heritage Area

Atchafalaya National Heritage Area

An American-Indian word, "Atchafalaya" (Think of a sneeze: uh-CHA-fuh-lie-uh) means long river. Established in 2006, the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area stretches across 14 parishes in south-central Louisiana. It is among the most culturally rich and ecologically varied regions in the United States, home to the widely recognized Cajun culture as well as a diverse population of European, African, Caribbean and Native-American descent.

The Louisiana State Museum

LA hdrlogoWelcome to the Louisiana State Museum!

Founded in 1906 with a mission to collect, preserve, interpret and present the state's rich history and diverse cultures, the Museum's collection now totals more than 450,000 artifacts and works of art. These provide an authentic experience of Louisiana to visitors from around the world while enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Our "collection" includes a complex of seven historic French Quarter buildings that have become icons of New Orleans - especially the Cabildo and Presbytère on Jackson Square - and a statewide system of regional and special focus history museums in Baton Rouge, Thibodaux, Patterson and Natchitoches.

We look forward to your visit. Meanwhile, check here often for the latest on exhibitions, programs and our ever-growing collections of fascinating history!
